Activism
The policy or action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or social change. Activism can take many forms.
- Legislative:
- Legislative address can involve making your case to your legislators in person, by email, or phone.
- You might attend official meetings that deal with the subject of your cause, sharing information to plead your case and/or refuting inaccurate statements by the opposition.
- It can also include volunteering to help the political campaigns of legislators who endorse your cause - or the opposite action of aiding their challenger's campaign if they are against your cause.
- Public interaction
- Activism can take the form of public education - providing relevant information regarding your cause.
- Collecting petition signatures online, by email, or the best method: in person.
- Media involvement:
- Contacting the media by way of letters to the editor or direct mail, email, and phone. Media involvement includes college newspapers / newsletters, clubs, and educational focus groups as well as public organizations.
- Volunteering for Established Conservation Organizations:
- Most organizations are thrilled to have volunteers to help with the many tasks involved with their cause. This experience often gives the volunteer a positive element to future applications for college acceptance and employment.
- Fundraising for your favorite organization can be as simple as running a bake sale in your community to the more complex public contacts seeking supporters (very similar to gathering petition signatures in method).
- Note that organizations accepting volunteer help are ready and willing to train their volunteers to ensure their level of understanding and comfort when involved in activities.
- Direct actions:
- Can involve peaceful demonstrations (with legal permit). Peaceful demonstrations can be as simple as your group wearing signage naming your cause in public areas.
- Civil disobedience is a tool of activism as well and can be effective in raising public awareness, but carries risks that can be as serious as going to jail, depending on the specific action. Use your good judgement here.
